Parenting Tip of the Month
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle... October is full of fun costumes, changing leaves, and candy! Ready or not, Halloween is just around the corner. Whether your child dresses up as a little monster or a beautiful princess, it’s a fun time for families to walk the neighborhood while the children collect candy and show off their costumes. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep Halloween safe!
- Make sure all costumes are fit to size; not too small, not too big, just right! This will help prevent your child from tripping over extra fabric.
- Try to buy bright, reflective costumes to make it easier for drivers to see them.
- Carry glowsticks! Not only do they make it easier for people to see you, but they are also fun to look at!
- Halloween and toddlers- Always have a “Plan B” costume. From diapers that leak, spit up, or any other accident, it’s good to have a backup to face the unexpected.
- Instead of using a mask, try non-toxic paint so it doesn’t obstruct children’s vision.
- Remind your children to look both ways before crossing the street and only cross on the corners.
- Walk with children under 12 years old.
You can also participate in trunk-or-treat events, where volunteers park their cars in safe, designated areas for children to walk around. Participants decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out candy and trinkets. Some trunk-or-treat events have child-friendly games and activities, too! Events like this can be a low-stress option for families instead of traditional trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. The most important thing to remember is to have fun and enjoy the time with your little ones!
